Raw cocoa is one of, if not the most health promoting foods. A few of the important health benefits of raw chocolate include:
  • Out of all the whole foods that contain antioxidants, raw cocoa is the highest in the world.

      • Contains more heart healthy phenols than red wine.

The health enhancing properties of cocoa are severely limited by heating, adding dairy products and by using alkaline washes [a practice employed by many Belgian chocolate makers]. Being a raw food, Raw Amour is not heated above a temperature that would destroy the enzymes and nutrients which give chocolate its health promoting properties.


Free radicals are the by-products of oxygen use by our cells. Too many free radicals can lead to destruction of normal structures such as DNA in cells. Antioxidants are phenolic substances in our food that protect our health by scavenging the free radicals that cause DNA damage. Out of all the whole foods that contain antioxidants, unprocessed (raw) cacoa is the highest in the world. It is higher in antioxidant concentration than processed cocoa, green tea and blueberries, and has more heart healthy phenols than red wine. The Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (Orac) test measures the capacity of a specific food substance to absorb and delete excess free radicals from the body. The Orac test cited below was performed on February 21, 2012 at the United States Department of Agriculture regulated Zen-Bio Laboratory in Triangle Park North, Carolina.

It is a known fact that excessive heat during fermentation and roasting of the beans, cocoa fat content and the inclusion of milk in the processing of chocolate can negatively affect the antioxidant benefits of cocoa. Variations in Orac values can be attributed to these variables.

Studies show that dairy products (note Godiva milk chocolate) actually block the absorption of antioxidants in chocolate. Even though it is hand-made from high quality ingredients, the higher heat used in the roasting processing of Fruition Chocolate diminished its antioxidant capacity. Cocoa butter, composed almost exclusively of fat, has no antioxidant capacity. Even though it is raw, the Orac value of Choc Alive is extremely low because the number one ingredient in Choc Alive is cocoa butter.
